Top Television Choices: Seven Must-Watch Movies This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's daring critique addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty along with the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress delivers an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out due to her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome procedure titled "The Substance". This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, resulting in a steadily more parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit mystery stars Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a hiatus from covering world issues to board a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, as well as other affluent guests. But after an unknown lady goes overboard one night and everyone denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills through this clever supernatural story captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this meta comedy caper. He plays an egotistical celebrity named Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to appear at a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to investigate the alleged criminal, his unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the children frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. The actor portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence monetising the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to present Tammy Faye with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to discover a mole among the team out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. The two stars excel of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
